Section A – Sacrifice

After a four year hiatus, progressive metal band Section A returns with their third album, Sacrifice. The core members of Andy Engberg (ex-Lion’s Share) on vocals and Torben Enevoldsen (Acacia Avenue, Fatal Force) on guitar remain. Filling out the band is new drummer Thomas Heintzelmann (Decoy), with keyboard work supplied by Lasse Finbraten of Circus Maximus. Like their previous works Sacrifice reflects the attributes of its principal members. Engberg is a true heavy metal vocalist, offering range and versatility without spoiling the music with unnecessary or incidental trips down the road of modern hardcore vocals. Guitarist Enevoldsen’s guitar work thrills, varying between simple efficiency and majestic fret forays.

Vera (LordsofMetal.nl): Na de voortreffelijke albums ‘Insider’ (2004) en ‘Timetropia’ (2007) is een nieuw Kingcrow album iets om met kloppend hart naar uit te kijken. De Italiaanse band levert immers steeds uitzonderlijk diepgravende en knappe progressieve rock/metal af waarin echo’s van Dream Theater, Pink Floyd, Porcupine Tree en Tool een fantastisch eigen geluid produceert. Kingcrow maakt albums waar elk onderdeel belangrijk is: voorop staat natuurlijk de dynamische, maar soms ook heel gevoelige muziek. Daarnaast is er ook ditmaal weer een geraffineerd en donker concept, wat mooi geïllustreerd wordt door het artwork. Bovendien blijft Kingcrow gefocust op nummers schrijven die nooit verworden tot een labyrint van hoogdravend technisch vertoon – al zijn het overduidelijk zeer vakkundige muzikanten – maar blijft alles vrij toegankelijk en vloeiend.

Empty Tremor – Iridium

Bart (LordsOfMetal.nl): Empty Tremor uit Italië bestaat al behoorlijk lang, maar dit album markeert de eerste stap zonder Daniele Liverani, hun mentor en toetsenist sinds lange tijd. Vanuit warrige omstandigheden veroorzaakt door deze en andere veranderingen stapt een band naar buiten die fris en triomfantelijk de wereld van de gepassioneerde progressieve metal weer binnentreedt. ‘Iridium’ is het juweel dat de band wist te vormen uit alle elementen van hun verleden. Progressieve metal in de stijl van de oude Dream Theater, maar toch in haar eigen klasse. Omdat het wat te melden heeft. Omdat het stevig op eigen benen staat. Simpelweg omdat het een prachtige lading muziek is.

Aspera – Ripples

Het uit Noorwegen afkomstige Aspera is een nieuwe band in het melodieuze prog rock wereldje. En afgaande op hun debuutalbum Ripples kunnen we met recht spreken van een aanwinst.

Aspera is niet alleen een nieuwe band maar ook een zeer jonge band. De gemiddelde leeftijd is amper 20 jaar! Aan de sound is het echter niet te horen want de band klinkt zeer volwassen en lijkt nu al een eigen geluid te hebben.

Natuurlijk zijn er veel invloeden te horen van andere bands uit het genre (o.a. Dream Theater, Threshold) maar al die invloeden zijn keurig samen gekneed tot een mooi geheel waarin ook de eigen inbreng van de band prima tot uiting komt. Tevens zit er veel afwisseling in de songs. Het ene moment zijn ze melodieus en catchy en daarna weer heavy en aggressief. In dit genre is het altijd moeilijk om de luisteraar van begin tot eind te kunnen boeien maar de “jochies” van Aspera zijn daar goed in geslaagd.

Nou, daar is ie dan, de belangrijke tweede plaat. ‘Lucidity’ schopte het tot nr. 1 in mijn jaarlijst van 2006 dus u begrijpt, beste lezer, dat ik meer dan benieuwd was naar Delains’ tweede. Deze keer geheel als bestaand collectief opgenomen, de band zoals die al veel heeft opgetreden dus en dat heeft zeker een positieve invloed gehad.

Review: Anthropia – The Chain Reaction

Anthropia is a French band who with ‘The Chain Reaction’ release their second album. In 2006 the band debuted with the album ‘The Ereyn Chronicles Part One’ which was released on the famous Magna Carta label. Even more than nowadays the band then was a solo project of guitarist/vocalist/ composer Hugues Lefebvre. Now he has gathered other musicians around him, but still Hugues is the man who writes and rules. Fortunately, the man understands the art of composing.

‘The Chain Reaction’ is a concept album. In short, the story is about a ‘soul’ that has had enough of always having to obey orders from his masters. He is being kept on a leash and a lot of promises are made. He decides to only do what he wants in his next life. But this behaviour and the loss of his soul mate, result in an unexpected ending; the end of human kind. You may understand it is a science fiction story which also has some biblical elements. The implementation of the songs is perfect and the CD also sounds very solid (Tommy Hansen did the mastering of the CD, Hugues himself was responsible for the production). The music reminds me a lot of the work of Pain Of Salvation and to a lesser degree of a band like Evergrey. Everything a concept album in this genre needs is there: heavy parts and sensitive passages, flashy solos and beautiful acoustic guitar parts, great solo and harmony vocals (the combination of Hugues and Nathalie Olmi is perfect), pounding drums and atmospheric piano pieces. The highlight of the CD for me is ‘The Torn Off Wing Of The Butterfly’ because of all the ideas that are incorporated in that song. For fans of the bands mentioned above, this is a compulsory purchase.

Recensie: Queensrÿche – American Soldier

American Soldier is een conceptplaat. Dat klinkt vaak mooi maar het gaat om de goede nummers en niet om een verhaal in eerste instantie. Queensryche heeft in het verleden echter bewezen dat ze een goed verhaal prima vorm kunnen geven in muziek. Zo ook op American Soldier. De plaat is over het algemeen vrij donker van aard maar bevat vele prachtige momenten en alles is weer prachtig gelaagd. Tekstueel heeft Tate alles uit de kast gehaald waarbij hij inspiratie putte uit gesprekken met veteranen uit verschillende oorlogen. Muzikaal staat de ritmesectie weer solide aan de basis terwijl Michael Wilton door het afscheid van Mike Stone alle partijen alleen moest spelen met af en toe wat hulp van Kelly Gray. Wilton heeft dit echter met verve gedaan. Tate zelf weet de slijtage op zijn stembanden meer dan meesterlijk te omzeilen en dat geheel zorgt voor een geweldig geheel. Queensryche heeft sinds Tribe geen slechte studioplaat meer gemaakt maar American Soldier mag met recht een nieuw meesterwerk genoemd worden!
